Cancellation Policy for Writers’ Sanctuaries

In the last two years, Sanctuary has become increasingly popular. People sign up months in advance, and many people who want to come are not able because the days are full. Recently, however, I have experienced some issues with people cancelling at the last minute. The spot, which I could have filled five times over, goes empty. Many people are very good about covering the cost of their space anyway, but some do not seem to understand that I have lost the registration fee because of their last minute decision. (If I was able to fill the space with someone from the waiting list, I have given them a full credit or a refund. But often, with just a day or two’s notice, I have not been able to find a replacement).

Because of this, I have regretfully decided to institute an official cancellation policy. Here it is:

Cancellation must be done a minimum of five days in advance for a refund (minus a $20 administration fee) or for a full credit toward a future sanctuary.

If you have to cancel with less than five days notice and I am able to fill your spot, your registration fee can be refunded (minus a $20 administration fee) or you may have a full credit toward a future sanctuary. If your spot cannot be filled, unfortunately no refunds can be made.

In the summer of 2013 I was invited to do a TEDtalk on “Shining the light on our Changing Communities”. I talked about the therapeutic writing program I do with incarcerated women. You can view the talk here.
